5

I'm not big on diet trends and going crazy with what I do or don't put in my body for fuel.  I have a good understanding of what is and isn't good for me thanks to my three college food science and nutrition classes.  To me though, it has just never been a huge priority.  I like food but I don't love it.  For the better part of the last decade it's actually been more of a chore to consume than enjoy.

When I had my big jaw surgery six years ago and was limited to broth, smooth shakes, and anything liquid, I admit I missed food.  I even had a dream about eating some taco bell.  Wow, low point in wanting something to eat.  I drooled over a pizza hut commercial, which if you know me is absurd because I do NOT like pizza.  It was all just so...solid.  I craved solid.  I remember trying to make mashed potatoes with lots of butter and milk in an attempt to make it smooth enough to go through my wires.  It was a disaster that I'm sure ended in tears on my part.

While on my forced liquid diet, for 7 weeks, I ended up losing 22 pounds (14 in the first six days, I was very sick right after the surgery but I'll spare you the horrible details).  I got down to 118 pounds, which at 5 foot 8 inches tall, isn't a lot.  I managed to lose all the weight I gained in my first two years of college.  I felt great.  I had to buy new pants because mine kept falling down.  It was weird.  I was by no means overweight before but I was happy to have a fresh start from all the bad eating I'd done in my early college years.

So when I could finally eat normal food again did I change my diet and eat better?  Ha!  Of course not.  I didn't go crazy though.  I think it took me about four years to gain it all back, which isn't bad in my opinion.  I filled out more as a person and I know I would've put some of that weight on regardless of my diet.  We can't all stay at our 20-year-old shape forever, and really, who would want to?

In the next two years I managed to put on more weight.  Not a ridiculous amount, but enough to make me actually feel uncomfortable at times.  I grew up pretty skinny so this was so weird and annoying to me.  It didn't annoy me enough for a while and I'm very good at dressing to make my body look better than it is, ha.  When I went in to try on wedding dresses the girl in the shop had to go up 2 sizes from what she guessed I'd be just by looking at me.

This made me feel more comfortable in my skin and I settled that I was ok with my weight as long as I felt good.  I did want to be more toned, but a number was not what I was going to live my life trying to achieve.  David and I joined a gym and I set a goal at my job at the time to lose 25 pounds by Christmas.  It never happened.  I did enjoy going to the gym, but I enjoyed sitting at home knitting more.  I also enjoyed sleeping in the morning so I never worked out then.

Then, life got busy.  I was planning a wedding, stressing about a job that wasn't right for me, moving, and trying to figure out what do with myself next in life.  I stopped going to the gym, though the four months I didn't work would've been the perfect time to make it a new habit.

Fast forward to a few weeks ago.  I'd been growing discontent with how I looked and felt.  After seeing pictures of myself and realizing it wasn't how I wanted to look I got really annoyed with myself.  We had started going to the gym again but nothing was happening.  Also, my jaw started hurting a lot again and eating was becoming a nightmare.

Last week I hit a wall.  We had brisket for lunch at work and after eating it I ended up with a raging jaw/headache and felt miserable.  I had a vanilla shake at dinner instead of the usual burger and fries at mighty fine.  During praise band practice (where I could barely sing without wanting to cry) I made a choice.  I was going to tackle both these issues at once.  I decided to put myself on a semi-liquid/soft diet for a while in hopes of letting my TMJ relax and let the cartilage not have to be brutalized in the process of chewing.  I had hopes that this would also help me get healthier.

David and I headed to HEB after practice and shopped for what I needed.  First I knew I needed protein powder to make sure I stayed healthy.  We also bought frozen berries, fresh spinach, bananas, milk, and lots of rice.

I've been very much over shakes since they were all I could eat six years ago but I stayed strong and made my first shake the next morning.  It was okay.  I made one for lunch too, and by the time lunch rolled around and I went to the fridge to get it...it was brown and so gross looking.  Fail.  Note to self: bananas don't have staying power in a shake.  I continued with my morning shake to replace my usual breakfast taco and Dr Pepper.  For lunches I've been eating soup, or other light but easy to consume foods.

For dinners we've switched from hamburger helper and eating out a lot to baked tilapia and chicken soup mixed with rice.  Oh and water!  I don't like water very much.  Never have.  I know it's what I need though so I've been drinking a lot of it.  I've felt a bit sick sometimes because I think I'm just not used to that much water but surprisingly, I like it more now than I did a week ago.

So today, I feel better.  My jaw still hurts, but I'm keeping the severe headaches away by eating lite.  I still have a ways to go, but I've lost five pounds and I'm feeling better.  I'm not starving myself, but I am letting myself feel hungry before I shove food in my mouth.  I eat a lemon cookie when I want something sweet and I can have a dr pepper if we're out to eat, but not at home where I might accidentally drink three...oops!

Yes this is helping my general health and well-being, but I think what it's doing most in me is helping me with my self-control issues.  I can know something is bad for me but consume it anyways.  In this case, knowing is not half the battle, actually using the knowledge is.  Sorry G.I. Joe, you were wrong.

Here's to continuing my journey into healthy eating and learning to feel great in who God has made me to be!

A wall: before & after

This wall behind our dining table has been bugging me lately. It had random stuff on it with no real color scheme to it. Our kitchen is red and aqua so I wanted that to carry over to the dining area.

What's great about this little redesign is it was all free! I'm a big fan of free. I simply took everything off that didn't go with the colors I wanted and then rearranged what was left and scoured the apartment for like-colored items.

I decided to keep some neutral colored pieces (black, gray, brown) and some dark blue and yellow. The blue pieces let me put our awesome glass Tardis panel up there. Our friend Sophie made it for us for Christmas and this is the perfect display place for it! There was also a bit of sparkly navy on my little knit owl.

Some of the pieces are handmade by me, some were wedding shower gifts, and others are souvenirs from our honeymoon in Vancouver.

I don't have a great picture of the wall before but I moved the W and birdcage woodcut. They were in the middle and looked really random. I wanted to be able to hang the picture line straight across the space and get some balance. Moving the W and birdcage into the empty space under the higher shelf really helped with this.

This biggest new addition to the wall is the picture line. I love it! I painted the clothespins a few days ago and simply clipped them on some black cotton embroidery thread held up by thumbtacks. I painted the tacks with the same silver glitter from the silver clothespins.

All these pictures were on our fridge but I love having them displayed more visibly here. The photo booth pics are us from 4 years ago and a few months ago. The other pics are save the dates and thank you cards from friends who all got married in the last year.

There's still a little void next to the birdcage but I have an embroidery piece I plan to hang whenever I finally finish it :)

Hope you liked this little before & after. I have lots of little projects in the making and can't wait to share them with yall!

a great day

Yesterday was a great day.  I wasn't feeling well Friday or Saturday and Sunday started out the same way.  We had our spring musical at church in the morning that I was singing in so I had to get up.  The musical went great, it's always such a blessing to sing at my church.  I love the people there so much and really view them as my extended family.

After service my Bible study class went to our leader's house for lunch and a small study.  We took Chuy with us and it's fun to see him follow everyone around sniffing them and figuring out if he likes them or not.  He goes back and forth on people a lot, ha.

After lunch we went to the Ransom Museum at UT to see the King James exhibit along with one of five Gutenberg Bibles in the Country.  It was pretty awesome to see such an old but important piece of Biblical and literary history.  The man who made it died poor, but he started a revolution that put the Bible into the hands of the people who wanted to consume God's word.  I'm so thankful for that.

Gutenberg Bible
After the museum some of us went to REI, sonic, Michael's then home.  Sophie and I worked on some paintings for our Sunday school classroom while David and Alex played video games.  Once they were over shooting people on screen we watched some New Girl (hilarious!) followed by the amazing Doctor Who.

It was a great evening of just relaxing with dear friends, painting, and laughing.  We have some more canvases to paint but I'll try to remember to get pics of them up on here.  We're having a lot of fun painting them!

my handsome hubby chillin before we toured the exhibit

ps. I may have bought a 16 pack of glitter in fun colors.....can't wait to play with it!

Jesus, lover of my soul

The hubs and I have been singing together for over 6 years now and it's our true passion.  We finally made a recording for the first time last night!  We've had live gigs recorded but this is the first time recording ourselves.  I'll be honest, it's weird!  I feel weird not having a mic in my hand and not being on a stage to perform.  So weird.

Well anyways, here's the video.  I know this is mostly a crafting blog but music is an equally big part of my life so I wanted to share with yall :)

A photo challenge

I've been doing a photo challenge on instagram this past week and it's fun! Below is a recap of week 1.

day 1: self portrait
day 2: what I wore
day 4: favorite color
day 5: someone I love
day 6: childhood memory
day 7: something new
Did you notice the lack of day 3? Oops! It was clouds, and it was a completely clear Texas day so I don't feel too bad. I thought about taking a picture of my bag of stuffing then....forgot :)

An elephant

I just love Ysolde Teague's knitting patterns. I have a few of her books and have knit several pieces. One of my favorites is Elijah. I knit one four years ago for my now nephew and had a hard time giving him away, honestly. He was just so snugly and the perfect shape to be held. I managed to part with him but I've been longing to knit another one ever since.

One of David's co-workers saw a picture of the first one I knit and requested one for her soon-to-be born little boy. We talked colors and I set forth to make another adorable little guy. This time I made his feet green which I just love. It gives just enough color and interest to make him interesting without going crazy.

Maybe someday I'll make an Elijah for our home. It will be turquoise most likely though...duh :)

goin' bunnies

I have a pretty decent list of projects I need to work on this coming week for some custom orders.  I also have a surprise gift I'm hand sewing for this weekend.  With all this on my plate, what is it that I feel compelled to do as soon as I get home from work today?
bunnies!
Yup...I want to knit a handful of bunnies.  It's quite ridiculous I know.  Maybe I'll just knit one then get back to my blanket stitches and colorful felt.  Oh by the way, here's a sneak peak pic of what I'm working on.  The recipient might possibly read this, or see it on facebook so I can't post any more, it would give it away too easily!

Here's to some crafting focus in the next week...and to bunnies :)

One year!

The last two weeks have been crazy busy around here, sorry for the lack of posting. This past Monday, the hubs and I celebrated our first year of marriage (and 6 years, 1 month together)!!! We had a fun laid back date after work and he sent me some beautiful flowers at work earlier in the day.

It's been a wonderful year and I'm so excited to see all the adventurers we'll experience this next year. Some planned highlights are Disneyworld, saving for a house, and of course lots of music and crafting.

David, you are cool like bow-ties and I love you a ridiculous amount!!
