ideas ideas...

I've caught an itch to start sewing some more lately.  Knitting is my favorite craft but let's be honest...it can take forever sometimes and if you knit tight (which I do) it can start to hurt the fingers after a few hours.  I'm stubborn and continue to knit when my fingers hurt and that's just bad...bad Miranda!

Moving on...

I've been properly sewing for the past 7ish years and I really enjoy making bags.  Know what's so awesome about bags?  They don't have to fit.  If a bag turns out a little smaller or a little bigger than I planned it's all cool.  Well, unless you're making a tiny coin purse to hold an ID card that turns out too small for said ID card...but it's ok, it still fits my iPod nano, ear buds and little gym card. See, not a big deal.  Clothes on the other hand...blegh.  Too much measuring and worrying about it fitting in the end.  Just not my thing, so please, don't ever ask me to make clothing...unless it's knit...and a hat or scarf.  Those things stretch :)

Back to bags.  I love how simple yet useful that are.  If I'm in a detail mood I can sew a purse with lots of pockets, flaps, buttons, adjustable straps and so on.  Other times I can slap a few rectangles together with a zipper and make a tote bag or coin purse.  Instant gratification, I love it!

I have a lot of canvas at home that I bought to make tote bags to sell for a mission trip fundraiser. I'm pretty sure I made one...and I never even sewed up the hole in the lining...oops.  So now I have a lot of canvas I plan to dye and paint and make lots of simple tote bags to put in my shop.  We'll see if this pans out, but I'm pretty excited about this plan right now.

Keep an eye out for sneak peaks of painted canvas around here!

On a completely different note, David and I are starting a worship/prayer time at our church tomorrow that we hope to make a monthly thing.  We've been praying and working on it for almost a year and we're finally doing it!  I'm really excited to see how God will use us tomorrow.  I love singing for His glory!

a new bloom

purple topaz & silver flower

I've been working on little odds and ends around the apartment lately.  A bigger glittery chevron piece, mantle garland, spray painting, flowers to hang and flowers to wear.  Above is the latest flower to wear.  I've been making these for decoration purposes but I really like them for adornment purposes now too!  They're a nice contrast to my ric-rac flowers which have a lot of structure.  I ordered 16 new metallic yarn colors last night and hope to make many more flowers as soon as I get the yarn in.  Get excited...I know I am :)

Glitter

I've been playing with glitter lately. I bought a little sampler pack a few months ago and finally got around to experimenting.

I first tried it on the tops of some salsa jars I've been saving. They're a great size for random little craft supplies and oversize buttons. The glitter adds just enough color and sparkle to liven up my craft room. The silver photographed the best but I also did some with orange and dark pink glitter. You can see the pink ones in the picture below.

Next I painted a small canvas a pale silvery aqua then added some big blue chevron stripes. The chunkier glitter is some I found in a box of paint we borrowed from my mother-in-law. I've been wanting to play with the chevron pattern lately so this was a fun little way to play with that.

This cute birdy has been a work in progress for a while. I bought a plain ceramic bird at Michael's a while back but couldn't decide what to do with it. It was yellow for a while but I didn't like it. I made too much of the silvery aqua paint for the chevron canvas so I painted it over the yellow. Loved it! I found some deep teal/purple glitter in the sample pack and added it to just the wings and tail. The colors actually match a screen printed bird in our room that I love.

I plan to glitterize lots more :)

Today I've been working on cleaning up the rest of the craft room. My fabric stash is out of control so that's going to take a while. I did, however manage to beautify my ribbon collection. Picture later perhaps :)

Oh hey blog...

I swear I didn't forget you existed...I even made posts in my head, but life has just been crazy and I keep forgetting to focus enough to update you. Oops! I even loaded these pics to my blogging app a few weeks ago, then just forgot. David and I had a blast in Florida with my sis and parents, visiting my fam there and going to Disney World! Here are a bunch of pics from my phone (some stolen from David's too). Enjoy, and expect a glittery post coming soon!

Give me Jesus

We finally recorded our second song, go check it out! It's a Jeremy Camp cover called Give Me Jesus, one of my favorites.

Quicky

A quick update before our crazy fun week begins.

Today we have an angry birds party for one of our favorite 2 year olds, followed by a wedding of one David's co-workers. Somewhere in there we also have to pack and clean up our apartment for our trip to Florida tomorrow!

We're going to see my grandma and the rest of my dad's family in Tampa, then head to Disney World for the whole week. I'm ridiculously excited, it's David's first time :) He also gets to meet the goofy side of my family. Maybe it will shed some light on why I am the way I am a little for him, ha.

I'm taking my iPad so I hope to be able to post some pics from Florida, but we'll see if that actually happens or not.

before & after: tick tock

I wanted to share a quick before & after I did last week.  This is a simple rusch wall clock from IKEA.  At only $1.99 I had my mom grab me two last time she journeyed to IKEA.  They've both been sitting on our kitchen counter for way too long and I got antsy the other day and needed to let my fingers rest from constant knitting.  I grabbed one and took it apart.  I was hoping I could just slip the current face out and use is as a template to make a new one in a more fun color or with fabric, but alas, it was double stick taped in like no one's business.

I gave in and decided I could just paint this one to spruce it up a bit.  Our music/craft room is painted "red" on two walls (it looks more hot pink to me, but that's another story) and we have pops of orange and yellow in the room already so I thought orange could be fun.

I began painting and of course they used glossy paper so the acrylic paint didn't want to stick to it very well.  If you could look closely at the clock you'd see some messy painting, but I don't care too much on this project.  I used fabric puff paint to go over the numbers and dots, luckily I could see them pretty clearly through the orange paint.

The original second hand was red and just looked blah over the orange face (plus it was a true red and I knew it would clash anywhere near our pink-red walls).  I tried painting it yellow first but didn't like it so I added enough silver paint to hie the yellow then covered it in silver glitter paint.  I love it!
When I finished I held it up to show David in front of our grey dining room wall and he said it looked too "halloweeny."  Luckily, it doesn't give off that vibe on a red(pink) wall.

When I'm not in such an impatient mood I plan to redo the other clock for our bathroom.  It's decorated in yellows and grays so that should be fun.  I might just mod podge some yellow bird fabric I have right on the clock face and forget the numbers, but we'll see.
